Do you believe
that there are some laws amended to help working mothers, but hurt women
instead ?
A Labor Safety and Health Law was amended in May 1991. This puts protection for married and pregnant women in writing. Employers are not allowed to dismiss women because they are married or pregnant. The law is expected to help working mother balance their responsibilities at home and at work.
How
to protect the career of a married woman with children
Maria knew her cries for help
would meet with no response.
Kate: Hey, Maria. It’s good to
see you. Did you win?
Maria: Yeah, in my dream.
Kate: You mean you didn’t beat
David.
Maria: No!
Kate: My goodness! David is
promoted!
Maria: He surely is. It surprises
you, right?
Kate:
I don’t get it. How come? You’re better qualified than he to take that
position, and you’re more experienced to boot . You know I’m right about
this.
Maria: It
never goes the way you plan. The committee didn’t have faith in me to take
the position, which needs more business travels soon next year. The main points
of what they believed came from my personal issues, such as a single mother
with children. In short, that made them justify discrimination of women. I
really hoped that they could have given me a chance to prove I’m as able and
flexible as a man, but they did not. It’s really a waste of time and effort!
Kate:
Maria, I know you’re irritated by that unfairness, but we might do something to
fix this.
Maria: Don’t do anything. Done is
done. I don’t want Carol to get hurt.
Kate: Carol doesn’t know this yet?
Maria:
Neither does David. They’ll come to office this afternoon because David’s
mother seems in terrible condition. Carol shouldn’t be caught between David and
me. It is better in a way without hard feelings over the promotion. Leastwise, let
David believe he won this fair and square. You know what I mean.
Kate:
Yes, I understand. You are such a thoughtful and considerate friend.
Out of gratitude, Maria
can’t resist the warm hug from Kate, and keeps her tears behind her eyes. She
doesn’t escape any words inappropriate about either David or Carol from her
lips, or she won’t be able to pull them back. She keeps to herself the moral
integrity -- having no remorse about what she says.
Maternity leave and labor safety in Taiwan
A Labor Safety and Health Law was amended in May 1991. This puts protection for married and pregnant women in writing. Employers are not allowed to dismiss women because they are married or pregnant. The law is expected to help working mother balance their responsibilities at home and at work.
The consequences of the law
unintentionally bring women to be in dead-end positions without a prospective
promotion in the labor force. In Taiwan like elsewhere in Europe (Miller,
2015), benevolent maternity leaves mean that women are much less likely than
men to achieve high-powered position at work with the same qualification.
